Farm Update June/July

June was a much better month to us than May was. Even though we did have a random freeze mid-way through June that caused some damage to a few garden plants. Thankfully we didn't have to replace any plants and everything is recovering nicely.

The CSA season is underway, we are in our third week already and even though the garden is still having to catchup to our harvesting needs, we are managing with a little help from some producer friends.

We had our first summer market in June at Eden Coffee & Cocoa which was great. July will bring another Eden Coffee market on July 14th, the Mountain Arts & Music July 4th market in Huntsville Square this Thursday, and the start of the Monastery market at the end of July.

In CSA news: We may have had weird weather to start the season, but we're bouncing back from that and trying to stay on top of bugs. Namely earwigs, grasshoppers, and slugs. Normally the grasshoppers don't give me much concern since we placed our chicken run in the center of two of our gardens, but this year there seem to be too many of them for the chickens to keep up. Still, they aren't as big a concern as the earwigs that have been so bad that some plants have been nearly decimated overnight. Luckily I have a no-fail solution for those pests. Shallow containers with soy sauce on the bottom and just enough oil to cover the soy sauce. Works like a charm every time.

In goat news: Our three baby boys are doing well and growing like weeds. I let some of the kids from my workshops pick names for them so we have Chocolate, Oreo, and Rain. These three will be available as wethers (castrated males) mid august, so if you've been thinking about getting some goats as pets let me know.

In chicken news: Our six chicks are doing great. They moved out to the chicken coop a couple weeks ago, but they haven't quite figured out how to get back in the coop at night, so I'm having to help them find their way each evening, which is just fine. I love sitting outside with my chickens, they are so fun to watch!

In soap news: Market season as arrived, as I mentioned above so if you attend the local Ogden Valley markets, look for me and stop by and say hello!

I've also started offering some skincare subscriptions, which you can find more information about below.

In book news: I've written a children's picture book about goats! It is now available for purchase! I have plenty of copies on hand if you'd like one. It's called If You Give A Goat A Flower and the goat in the book is based on our very own Finnick!

In workshop news: I have been having SO much fun with the kids who have come to the workshops. I still have spaces available for all the remining classes, so if you have some kids aged 5-12 who need something to do on a Tuesday morning, you can still sign them up here!
