Workshop Descriptions:

Week 1: Eggs & Milk (June 4th)

Kids will learn where eggs and milk come from. They'll learn about chicken anatomy, growth stages of chickens, and the difference between fertilized and unfertilized eggs and if you can eat them. They will get to hold baby chicks, as well as adult ones. Kids will also learn how we get milk, what has to happen in order for animals to produce milk, how to safely handle milk once you get it, and if my goat is a willing participant that day, the kids will even get a chance at milking by hand.

Week 2: Cheese & Condiments (June 11th)

This workshop will take place in the ranch kitchen. Please note, we do not have a commercial kitchen and no one regulates our kitchen. I do however have a food handler's permit and we will be using safe food handling practices.

In this workshop the kids will learn how to make fresh goat cheese using raw milk from our goat, Honey. They will learn what rennet is, and where it comes from. They will also learn a little bit about cultures & bacteria, but since we won't be using added cultures in the cheese, we won't go indepth about it. We will also be making mayo* from scratch and using some of that mayo to make our own ranch dressing. The kids will get to take home some cheese, mayo, and ranch dressing.

*homemade mayo uses raw, unpasturized eggs. If you are uncomfortable with this you can send your child to the workshop with pasturized eggs from the store or skip this class.

Week 3: Composting & Bugs (June 18th)

This workshop is the foundation for week 4. Kids do NOT have to take this workshop in order to attend week 4.

Kids will learn about the different soil types. They'll get to walk around the ranch and feel examples of different soil types we have on the property and note the differences. They will learn how to build a compost pile, how big to make it, and how to maintain it. They will learn why compost can help improve the soil, the difference between green and brown materials, and the microorganisims in the compost and soil that help break down the things we add to the pile so we can use it more easily.

We will also look at worm jars to see how worms live and work in the soil. We'll learn about good bugs in the garden, and bad bugs. The kids will build a bug hotel for good bugs that they can take home.

Week 4: Fruits & Veggies (June 25th)

This workshop will focus on growing fruit and vegetable plants. They will learn the lifecycle of plants, what plants need to grow and thrive, and how to start different kids of seeds. We will touch on soil types again, learn how to read a seed packet, and start some seeds that the kids will be able to take home with them.

We will also take a garden tasting tour and learn how to tell when different foods are ready to harvest.

Week 5: Herbs & Spices (July 2nd)

This workshop will take place outside and in the kitchen. The kids will take a sensory tour of the herbs we have in the garden. This will include touching, smelling, and tasting. We'll talk about the health benefits of different herbs, how to make herbal teas and try some herbs steeped in hot water. The kids will also get to make an herbal salve to take home and an indoor herb garden.

Week 6: Bread, Crackers, & Desserts (July 9th)

This workshop will take place in the ranch kitchen. Please note, we do not have a commercial kitchen and no one regulates our kitchen. I do however have a food handler's permit and we will be using safe food handling practices. It's also important to note that I do not have the capacity to provide a safe space to make gluten free items for this class. If your child is gluten intolerant, this would be a class to skip.

The kids will get hands on experience in making a basic white bread loaf from start to finish. This will be a small bread loaf so we have time to cook all of them during the class.

We will also make cheese crackers, and chocolate chip cookie dough. The cookie dough will not be cooked in class, but the kids will get to take it home to bake. They will also get to take home a bag of their crackers, and of course, their loaf of bread.

Week 7: Fun & Healthy Drinks (July 16th)

The kids will get to take a sensory tour of our tea garden, which incudes smelling, touching, and tasting. They will get to experiment with making their own tea blend by trying different teas, taking notes, and adding herbs and flowers a little at a time to change the way their tea tastes until they create a blend they like. They will get to take a small bag of their tea blend home with them.

We will also learn how to make Pine Needle Soda. The kids will get to taste some, and then start a jar of their own which will be sent home with them to finish. They will also learn how carbonation is made.

And finally, the kids will learn how to make fresh lemonade and take some home with them.

Week 8: Seeds to eat & Save (July 23rd)

This workshop will take place outside and in the kitchen. The kids will get to roast raw pumpkin and sunflower seeds, which they will get to take home with them.

They will also learn where poppy seeds come from and be able to save some seeds for planting. (These seeds will NOT be seeds for eating. Please don't make poppy seed muffins with them.)

They will also learn about saving seeds from vegetables and flowers and how cross-pollination can affect the fruit they get from their seeds. The kids will be sent home with tomato, pea, and marigold seeds they save themselves.

Week 9: Cooking From the Garden (July 30th)

This workshop will take place in the ranch kitchen. Please note, we do not have a commercial kitchen and no one regulates our kitchen. I do however have a food handler's permit and we will be using safe food handling practices.

In our last workshop, the kids will get to harvest items from the garden and make delicious foods to take home. We will be making:

  • Salsa
  • Refrigerator pickles
  • and Kale chips.
